About Us

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The vision of Troop 583 is to reinforce the mission of the Boy Scouts of America by offering the youth of Santa Clarita a balanced scouting program run by Boy Scouts and mentored by involved and committed adult leaders. Troop 583 is unique in that our home is Valley Trails Ranch, a fully equipped camp in Castaic, CA. We meet twice a month for Troop meetings around the campfire and twice a month for Patrol Meetings. Our Chartering Organization is the Santa Clarita Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation (SCVQUWF), whose primary mission is to support local wildlife through habitat restoration and conservation, encourage young people to enjoy the “great outdoors,” and to promote participation in a variety of shooting sports. Troop 583 is proud to offer the premier shooting sports program in the Bill Hart District. Our staff of trained National Rifle Association and National Archery Association instructors are excited to offer a safe, well rounded shooting sports program. Some of the programs run by our instructors include: Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery Merit Badge Workshops and fun shoots, and NRA Marksmanship Qualification and Competitive shoots. In addition, Troop 583 runs an active Hiking and Backpacking program.

We are glad your son has selected Troop 583 to pursue his scouting career!  The amount of information can be overwhelming, so we've created this spot for you to refer back to as your son begins his scouting journey.

If you attended the New Parent Meeting, you will have received a packet with all the files on the left.  You can refer back here if you can't find your packet. Please fill out all the forms as soon as possible and return them to Mr. Hughes.

There is a wealth of information on our Troop website, but much of it can only be accessed if you are logged into the site.  Please send an email to the Webmaster if you are having difficulty with the site.  Once you are logged into the site, review the "Troop Info & Contacts" page, as it contains all of the troop's procedures, as well as the contact info for the current Scout and Adult Leadership teams.  All other troop member contact info is in the Roster page... all the patrol advisors are listed at the bottom of the roster, and you can use your browser's search function to find a name ().

It is VERY important for your scout to keep track of his accomplishments in Scouting!  Your scout will need to purchase a Scout Handbook, a 3-Ring binder, a packet of top-loading page protectors, and a packet of baseball-card page protectors to hold all of his paperwork.  On the Troop Info & Contacts page of this website, print the "Boy Scout Record Keeping Worksheets.pdf" and read the section titled: "Record Keeping Binder".  Do not throw anything away!  Your son's Scout Handbook and Troop Record Keeping Binder are reviewed at every Board of Review for rank advancement and his binder is turned into the Boy Scout Council office when he applies for the rank of Eagle Scout.

It is Troop 583's wish that your son has a rich, rewarding, and successful scouting journey!  If you have any questions or need any assistance in guiding your son, please don't hesitate to ask the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, or Committee Chair for assistance!
